Obama City, the starting point of the Saba Kaido (mackerel road), has long supported the capital's food supply by delivering marine products and other ingredients to Kyoto as a miketsukuni. The festivals and culture of Obama, such as the Hoze Festival, which was introduced from Kyoto, still live on in Obama today.

As the name "Nara with the sea" suggests, there are many nationally designated cultural assets such as shrines and temples, including the national treasure Myotsu-ji Temple (main hall and three-story pagoda), and "Sancho-machi" (an important traditional building preservation district of the Kobanishigumi clan), which retains an elegant townscape, where visitors can enjoy visiting temples and walking around town. The area is also home to many nationally designated cultural assets, such as "Sancho-machi" (important traditional buildings preservation district of Obama Nishigumi).
A cruise (closed in winter) around "Sodomon," a nationally designated scenic beauty spot that attracts attention from abroad, is also popular.
In the city, visitors can enjoy a variety of gastronomic delights colored by the sea and history, such as saba-zushi (mackerel sushi), kobama small sea bream (sea bream) pickled in rice, heshiko (pickled heshiko), wakasa fugu (blowfish), and kuzu manjyu (steamed buns).
